LIVING LEGACY documents a community’s effort to preserve a historic and undervalued building and celebrate the work, sacrifices, and memories of their forebears who attended the school. The film captures the vivid school-day memories of the Russell School’s living alumni as well as the passion of the school’s board members who work persistently to maintain the school and share its history. The film also treats the building as a character allowing the physical space to express its own memories and develop a unique voice.

To preserve the history of the Historic Russell School, Dr. Kevin Oliver, head of the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences in the NC State College of Education, and Associate Professor Dr. Angela Wiseman, created a virtual tour of the Historic Russell School, interviewing alumni from the school as part of the process.
Using a DELTA virtual tours grant - which was designed to enable NC State faculty to create immersive virtual tours of laboratories, classrooms and learning environments - Dr. Oliver and Dr. Wiseman, along with DELTA staff, visited the Historic Russell School to capture a series of 360 images used to create the virtual tour using a platform called Matterport. They then worked with the Friends of Russell Rosenwald School board to determine which facts and details about the school were most important to include on the virtual tour.
We deeply appreciate their dedication to preserving this important history—enjoy exploring the virtual tour!
